Underwriter Trainee


Responsibilities

Summary
 
The primary responsibility concerns the risk management needs of the customer and achievement of the strategic and operating plan for profit, production and service established by the Hawaii office.
 
Main Responsibilities:

  • Complete pictorial and classroom training in Underwriting Basics, Property Casualty Principles, Property Casualty Concepts, Commercial Auto, Commercial Auto Rating, Commercial General Liability, Commercial Inland Marine, and Reinsurance Basics.
  • Complete computer training with Underwriting mentor and/or Customer Service Representative.
  • Under the direction of Underwriting Manager and/or mentor, underwrite risk in compliance with underwriting guidelines, manual rules, and classifications.
  • Under the direction of Underwriting Manager and/or mentor handle policy issuance, endorsements, cancellations, and renewals by obtaining critical underwriting information.
  • Operate within authority level, maintaining accurate file documentation on new and renewal business, and properly referring policies to Senior Underwriter and/or Underwriting Manager.
  • Responsible for production retention and growth through marketing and sales utilizing negotiating skills, sales techniques and planning, and presentations.
  • Perform special projects and duties as needed.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree or commensurate experience.
  • Property and Casualty experience preferred.
  • Ability to professionally and effectively communicate via oral and written communication with co-workers, agents, and insureds.
  • Ability and willingness to strengthen and expand individual, technical, and management skills through on-the-job training, assigned self-study, participation in department training activities and seminars.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel.
  • Ability to learn current National Interstate computer systems (e.g. POINT).
  • Ability to multi-task and work independently.
  • Travel Requirements:  Ability to make occasional trips for marketing calls and seminars (less than 10%).
