The Hawaii operations of National Interstate consist of a General Commercial Department and a Transportation Department. In late 1995, when most insurance companies in Hawaii were either withdrawing from lines of business or downsizing their operations, National Interstate entered the market to fill some of the voids created by these companies.

National Interstate's General Commercial Department provides Business Personal Property, Inland Marine, Business Interruption, Glass and Crime coverages, General Liability, Commercial Automobile, Workers' Compensation and Umbrella coverages.

National Interstate's Transportation Department offers the same coverages and programs as the General Commercial Department to passenger transportation and trucking operations in Hawaii.
